Young people walking along a wide path fringed with trees

Killearn Active Travel

The Killearn Active Travel initiative aims to create better walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure in wider Killearn in order to facilitate more active travel and more sustainable local transport, as well as creating more liveable streets.

Improving infrastructure

There are currently two path projects; (1) linking Killearn, Boquhan and Balfron, and (2) linking Oakwood and Ballagan Woods housing development with Killearn.

The initiative is being led by Killearn Community Futures Company, a well-established local not-for-profit with a focus on community and sustainability.

Connecting communities

Until 2024 the projects were funded by the Places for Everyone, an active travel infrastructure programme funded by the Scottish Government and administered by Sustrans. We completed stages 1 & 2 (Concept Design) and submitted applications for stages 3 & 4 (Detailed Design) for both projects.

From 2025 government funding moved from Sustrans and now sits in Transport Scotland’s Active Travel Infrastructure Fund (ATIF). Going forward Stirling Council will take the lead in path development as part of their Active Travel Plan.  We will continue to liaise with the council, seeking prioritisation of the Killearn projects.

Our objectives

  • Improve the quality of current active travel infrastructure
  • Better connect surrounding communities with Killearn village
  • Increase the number of everyday journeys made by walking, wheeling and cycling
  • Support more trips to school made by walking, wheeling or cycling instead of by car
  • Improve the safety of everyone travelling off-road.
